Each year, Brighton Fringe partners with local and national charities, companies and organisations to offer out various bursaries for artists. These bursaries have a range of offerings, such as free registrations, financial support or in-kind support, along with bursary criteria relevant to their interests and missions. In the first wave of Brighton Fringe 2024 bursaries, we had criteria ranging from supporting artists who are under 25, to elevating groups from marginalised communities, such as the LGBTQ+.

We had a great variety of bursaries available in wave one of our bursaries, which supported a total of eleven Brighton Fringe 2024 events. We also introduced Brighton Fringe venue bursaries for the first time this year, which will support ten Brighton Fringe venues through marketing and social media support.

The Pebble Trust Young People Bursary
For the thirteenth year running, The Pebble Trust is supporting Brighton Fringe artists by offering three bursaries to young people wishing to put on an event. They are supporting artists living in Brighton & Hove that are under 25, with no restrictions on event categories. Winners will be granted free registration, along with six hours of mentoring and £500 towards production costs.

The winner of this bursary will receive free registration fees for their event, marketing support on the Bird & Blend social media accounts, and rehearsal space at the Bird & Blend store.

This bursary was open to Brighton Fringe events that fall into the Children & Young People category, whether that’s theatre, music, or bubble-making.

Hannah’s LGBTQ+ Bursary

Artists could apply for this bursary if someone involved in their Brighton Fringe event identifies as LGBTQ+.

Maddie’s Trans Talent Bursary

Rhiannon’s Low-Income Bursary
With a background in marketing, Rhiannon will be supporting the recipients of her bursary through marketing mentoring. Artists could apply for Rhiannon’s bursary if they are on a low-income, with the aim being to support artists who may otherwise be unable to put on a Brighton Fringe event.

Sarah’s Cabaret & Variety Bursary
Having performed in the cabaret world and loving this genre of Brighton Fringe events, Sarah wanted to support an artist putting on a cabaret & variety show which was a little out of the ordinary. Alongside the free registration, Sarah will be mentoring the recipients of her bursary with admin support or sharing her cabaret wisdom.

We are very pleased to announce this years Brighton Fringe Award for Excellence in Association with The Actors Theatre, which was awarded at the Scotsman Fringe Awards ceremony by Richard Jordan of The Stage. After a year of amazing shows and tough judging decisions, Character Flaw by Philippa Dawson was selected as the winner for 2023! She will receive a free registration to take part in Brighton Fringe 2024, £500 toward production costs and a favourable hire deal with The Actors Theatre.

Character Flaw is an explortation of Philippa's experiences and journey through life with ADHD. Combining a mixture of sketches, personal anecdotes, trumpets, storytelling and more, you get an insight into the often-overlooked experiences of women with ADHD and the joys of living with neurodivergence. It is a heartwarming and emotionally vulnerable show that audiences have connected with massively. Philippa Dawson is a London-based performer, and debuted Character Flaw this year in London and at Edinburgh Fringe. (Instagram / Twitter)

“What a joyous example of Neurodiverse representation and I feel better for having gone to go see it. A pleasure to watch.” - Binge Fringe.

Philippa's response to winning the award was, "I’ve never been so gobsmacked in my life as when I won this award!!  Writing, producing and performing Character Flaw was a huge amount of work and emotions were high. Working on your own leaves room for a lot of insecurities to creep in … so to be recognised in this way was just incredible. I struggled with imposter syndrome a lot during Edinburgh Fringe and feel I didn’t always get as much joy out of the festival as I could have because of how I was feeling about my work. But after winning this award my confidence has really grown and I think one of the biggest things I’m looking forward to at Brighton is just being present and enjoying it! I can’t wait for more people to see the show and hope it keeps resonating with the neurodivergent and queer community especially!"

We would also like to congratulate runners-up Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story by Awkward Productions, as well as Birthmarked by Brook Tate who received a special commendation. Both of these events will receive a free registration for Brighton Fringe 2024.

Brighton Fringe were delighted to return to present the Brighton Fringe Award for Excellence at Edinburgh Fringe. The Brighton Fringe Award for Excellence has been running since 2011, and this year we were proud to be presenting the award in association with The Actors Theatre.

The Actors Theatre launched its Brighton Fringe venue for 2023 and won the Best Venue award, with a queer-focussed programme at the historic LGBTQ+ pub. At Brighton Fringe 2024 they will have two venue spaces, the main theatre space and the west bar where they're hoping to host a free Fringe.

A big congratulations to all of the shortlisted shows.

The Brighton Fringe Award for Excellence has been running since 2011, and this year is in association with The Actors Theatre in Brighton (formerly The Marlborough Theatre).

Previous winners of the award include Toby Marlow, the co-creator of SIX the musical for their event Hot Gay Time Machine at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe.

Judges are seeking high-quality work from emerging talent that has not previously performed at Brighton Fringe.

Runners-up will receive a free registration to participate in Brighton Fringe 2024, whilst the winner will receive a free registration to participate in Brighton Fringe 2024, £500 towards production costs and a favourable deal with The Actors Theatre.

Performed entirely naked, this show is a nail-biting descent into existential anxiety as humanity stares down the proverbial toilet. A surreal meditation on annihilation that rests on the knife edge between physical theatre and performance art.

In the year that Brighton Fringe invited audiences to ‘Journey Into Fringe’, Fringe-goers flooded venues across Brighton, Hove and beyond. Over four weeks and five weekends, over 160,000 tickets were sold to show-stopping circus, laugh-out-loud comedy, heart-wrenching theatre, unconventional cabaret and much more besides. Including free and non-ticketed events, overall attendances were nearly 500,000 people, both in person and online.

The largest arts festival in England, this year Brighton Fringe held 880 events: 875 in person and 5 digital pre-recorded, which materialised into over 3,500 performances for audiences in Brighton & Hove and those comfy at home.  Events took place at 126 venues across the city and the wider Sussex area, hosting the most weird, wild and wonderful shows from Brighton, the UK and around the globe.

Brighton Fringe’s average ticket price remained relatively affordable at £9.38 per ticket, a 5p decrease on 2022. The festival also saw an expanding programme of free events, as well as more and more events opting for Name Your Price ticketing in the wake of the cost-of-living crisis and rising energy bills.

Brighton Fringe CEO Julian Caddy said “Brighton Fringe is an open-access celebration of the arts in all its forms. It may be the biggest arts festival in England, but it remains largely unfunded and is utterly dependent on ticket sales to be successful. So it has been overwhelming to see the incredible enthusiasm from such a diverse range of audiences. After all we’ve been through over the past few years, we really needed this. I’m so grateful to everyone who made it happen.”

This year saw Caravanserai Brighton join established outdoor venues such as Brighton Spiegeltent, The Lady Boys of Bangkok and The Rotunda Theatre for the first time. Originally established at Camp Bestival, Caravanserai Brighton was brought to the city by Brighton Fringe, artist Pete Bateman and producer Aniela Zaba. Caravanserai was visited by over 120,000 people who took advantage of the free to enter space, free performances and activities alongside ticketed events in the two theatre spaces.

Celebrating the success of the artists and venues who made Brighton Fringe possible, Brighton Fringe announced their award-winners during the 2023 Brighton Fringe awards ceremony on Sunday. Brighton Fringe CEO, Julian Caddy awarded more than twenty awards to stand-out events and venues of the 2023 season. Winners included Nigerian theatre company Pawstudios Africa who took home The Brighton International Fringe Encore Award, which secures them the chance to perform their show at SoHo Playhouse in New York City, and After All These Years, performed at The Lantern @ ACT, were awarded the Fringe Review Outstanding Theatre award.

Sian Hutchinson: Tick My Box took home the Audience Choice award for best event whilst the Audience Choice best venue award went to The Actors Theatre, as voted for by the public. The Spirit of Brighton Fringe award was given to Paul Levy, writer and editor of Fringe Review, for his continued commitment to Fringe theatre and his relentless pursuit of challenging the status quo.

Brighton Fringe embraces a multitude of art forms and artistry in its vast and quirky programme, it is an open-access arts festival that prides itself on welcoming established and emerging artists, and supporting those taking their first steps with a variety of bursaries.

Brighton Fringe, England’s largest arts festival, will return 3 May - 2 June 2024.

Following a wonderful year, recording our highest numbers of performers, audiences, and sales since Brighton Fringe 2019, it's with a smile on our face that we say goodbye to Brighton Fringe 2023.

As with every year, we love to celebrate the events and people that took part in and made Brighton Fringe possible. With a wonderful 17 awards, from a range of organisations and judging panels, we bring you the Brighton Fringe 2023 award winners!
