Hampers at the ready, it’s the Fringe Family Picnics...

There is always a heavy emphasis on family friendly acts, and this year is no exception, from moving and shaking along with samba music to showing off the best downward facing dog in a yoga class.

Among those performing will be Peafrog Puppetry, bringing a fusion of puppetry, storytelling and original music with their new show The Tale of the Cockatrice.

Puppeteer Katie Underhay says: “We think our show is quite unique in that it’s not just for little kids to be entertained and then the parents have to sit through it – it’s one of those things we feel quite strongly about – that everyone enjoys it.

“We want to show off all of the different elements of our show and know that adults will enjoy it just as much as the kids will.”

Storyteller Sarah Lloyd Winter said she walked through the picnic by chance, but seeing the atmosphere made her decide to bring her show Tales from the Woods to this year’s event.

The show is a collection of miniature stories in which Sarah sets out to enchant and charm her listeners in only a matter of minutes.

“Seeing what a really lovely warm feeling the picnic had made me want to be a part of that experience too,” she said.

This year’s picnics will once again be held in the Royal Pavilion Gardens. Right in the heart of Fringe City they are accessible for everybody, with plenty of open space for the kids to let off some steam.

Families are able to sit down in the fresh air, take out a little time, and eat, drink and laugh together.

The Fringe City Family Picnic begins at 1pm on both the 6 and 27 May, and is non-ticketed, so everybody is welcome to come and go as they please.
